Cold water immersion increases the production of mood-elevating hormones and neurotransmitters: beta-endorphins, noradrenaline and dopamine. Dopamine is the ‘feel-good’ chemical that the human body releases, which is increased by 250% during cold exposure. Noradrenaline is also increased by up to 300%, it is a neurotransmitter and hormone. As a neurotransmitter, it is a chemical messenger that helps transmit nerve signals across nerve endings to other nerve cells, muscle cells or gland cells. As a hormone, it creates alertness, wakefulness, memory retrieval and formation. So obviously yes, it is absolutely fantastic for your mental health.
